Mikel Iturria (1992) has achieved an extraordinary triumph at home, in the 11th stage of the Vuelta a España 2019 (Saint Palais - Urdax-Dantxarinea, 180 km) and has thus repeated the victory of last year of Oscar Rodriguez. This is the ninth victory of Jon Odriozola’s Basque team in 2019, an exceptional season once again.
The Euskadi-Murias rider escape in a group of 12 riders. Iturria overcame bad moments and attack with 25 kilometers to go. He added seconds in his favor and did not stop until the finish line.
Six seconds were enough to get an exciting triumph for the Urnieta-born rider, his first professional victory in a route where he had trained in the weeks before La Vuelta. In fact, he joked that he would win at Urdax-Dantxarinea and asked sports directors to let them catch the chase.
Mikel Iturria: "The last two kilometers to the finish line have been very hard, because I have seen that the rivals were so close. But I gave everything because it was the only option to win. When I took the descent to the finish line I said 'come on'. I had no strength but it was about giving everything until the finish line. With 150-100 meters to go I have looked back, I have seen that the gap was enough to take the win. A dream come true ".
This is Euskadi – Murias team's ninth victory in 2019: three stages in the Volta ao Alentejo, one in the Vuelta a Castilla y León and another in the GP Torres Vedras-Agostinho Trophy for Enrique Sanz; two in the Tour of Portugal, for Mikel Aristi and Héctor Sáez; another for Aristi in the Tour of Limousin; and the latter from Iturria in one of the Basque stages of La Vuelta 2019.
